Wand by We-Vibe Review: My New Wand Vibrator of Choice
After my experience with the Magic Wand Rechargeable, the idea of trying the Wand by We-Vibe felt a little…daunting. What if once again, the intense vibrations of a wand vibrator proved to be too much to handle? What if I found that the Magic Wand Rechargeable really was the best wand vibrator ever, and that it was just my fault and my problem that I didn’t enjoy it? It’s unhealthy to be critical of oneself based on perceived “sexual failures,” I know, but beating myself up over my perceived sexual shortcomings is one of my signature traits!
(But don’t worry, I’m working on it.)
When We-Vibe initially reached out to me, one of the toys I was given for review (along with the Nova 2) was the Wand by We-Vibe. At $179.99, the Wand by We-Vibe seeks to be not only a luxury competitor to the Magic Wand Rechargeable, but also ultimately aims to surpass it altogether. The Wand by We-Vibe has many features the Magic Wand Rechargeable lacks, such as a fully waterproof design, a body encased completely in smooth, body-safe silicone,
It even includes two attachments, which is a nice perk considering you usually have to buy wand vibrator attachments separately. If you don’t like the included attachments, the Wand is also compatible with all other standard wand attachments thanks to its universal head.
While the Wand by We-Vibe doesn’t surpass the Magic Wand Rechargeable in terms of raw power, I found it to be an overall more pleasant wand vibrator to use overall. In the future, I anticipate the Wand by We-Vibe being my go-to wand vibrator of choice for several reasons, namely the fact that it’s waterproof as well as the general feel of its vibrations.
First Impressions of the Wand by We-Vibe:
The box for the Wand is HUGE! Wow! The Wand itself is about a foot long, but despite the monstrous size of its box, the Wand itself was much lighter than I expected it to be. It feels natural to hold, grip, and control it. I was pleasantly surprised by just how much of a contrast it is in comparison to the bulky, heavy Magic Wand Rechargeable. A wand vibrator that doesn’t feel like a weapon I can wield against potential home intruders? Sign me up.
The Wand by We-Vibe is completely encased in silicone, making it completely waterproof and overall nicer to look at visually. There’s a textured section of the handle that helps with maintaining grip (and is also aesthetically pleasing), and I really like how the squishy, malleable silicone surrounding the head can be pulled and pinched a little bit.
The head of the Wand is the same width as the Magic Wand Rechargeable, which is what allows for its compatibility with all other standard wand attachments. However, the head of the Wand by We-Vibe is a lot broader, more oval-shaped, and less flexible than the Magic Wand Rechargeable. For me, these are all perks, and I prefer the texture as well as about every other design aspect of the Wand to the Magic Wand Rechargeable.
In my opinion, compared to the Magic Wand Rechargeable the Wand by We-Vibe feels way more ergonomic, way more pleasant to hold, and way nicer overall.
Visuals:
The Wand by We-Vibe’s purple is a color I’ve seen before, namely on the We-Vibe Rave. While the Rave’s purple on its own causes it to look rather drab, depressing, and ultimately like a wallflower, I think the teal attachments on the Wand give the purple that pop it needs to really stand out. The glittery, lighter colored purple metal band is also a fun touch that breaks up what could otherwise be another case of uniformly dreary purple.
I’m also obligated here to compare the Wand by We-Vibe to the iconic Magic Wand’s design, and I must emphasize how much I prefer the Wand by We-Vibe’s design. The Magic Wand has been updated, but to me still looks really dated, sterile, and ultimately like it belongs in a hospital or something. The Wand by We-Vibe looks much more energetic and fun, making me immediately more drawn to it on a surface level.
Charging:
Regrettably, the Wand by We-Vibe doesn’t have my favorite feature from the Magic Wand Rechargeable—that is, it can’t be used while charging. This means that the Magic Wand Rechargeable will remain my eternal backup “whoops, forgot to charge my other toys” vibrator.
Like most other We-Vibe toys, the Wand utilizes a magnetic USB charger. This magnetic charger style is what allows the Wand to be fully waterproof. While this isn’t a feature I typically seek out in vibrators, I know it’s a huge perk for many other people, so good on We-Vibe for designing a waterproof wand. It also admittedly makes cleaning WAY easier.
The Wand by We-Vibe takes 90 minutes to charge, and indicates where it’s at in the charging process thanks to a convenient little light. If the light is blinking rapidly, the toy is charging, and if the light just stays steadily on, it means the toy is fully charged. If there’s no light at all, the toy isn’t charging and you’ve got a problem. According to the manual, one 90 minute charge results in up to 2 hours of active use of the Wand. If you’re using the app to control this toy, the remaining battery life is displayed within the app.
I have nothing bad to say about charging the Wand—it’s simple, it’s easy, and the magnetic prongs attach well to the Wand. I also appreciate that the charging cable for the Wand is pre-labeled. It’s a nice touch!
Wand by We-Vibe Controls:
First things first, the Wand by We-Vibe turns on by pressing and holding the power button for two seconds. Mercifully, the power button is its own separate control from any of the other buttons. Patterns are also quarantined to a separate button control, a little raised squiggle at the base of the main control panel. Unlike most vibrators that require you to press buttons to control the toy’s intensity, the Wand by We-Vibe instead uses…a joystick.
My first instinct was that this gradient-style control would be similar to that of the Pillow Talk Sassy, which increases in power (but can only increase) by pressing and holding a single button. Fortunately, though, the joystick of the Wand allows you to increase and decrease intensity as you please. You can either tap the joystick up and down to adjust the intensity slightly, or you can push it and hold it down for a drastic increase in power.
The joystick felt intuitive and simple to use, but I do feel a little uneasy about how the silicone seems to tug when the joystick is pushed. My partner expressed similar concerns, saying they were worried about the longevity of the joystick. Maybe I’m just overly paranoid, or too accustomed to buttons. I suppose on the bright side, the app controls will always be there as a backup.
App Controls:
I was already somewhat familiar with the We-Vibe app, having used it before with my We-Vibe Rave. I certainly didn’t use the app regularly, and preferred to control the Rave manually, but nevertheless, it wasn’t my first rodeo with the app. Pairing the Wand with the We-Vibe app was simple, and controlling it was pleasant, easy, and intuitive. I won’t go into an extensive explanation of how the app works, I’ll just say that it’s really easy to use and you should have no problem with it. It’s also a good way to visualize just what intensity the Wand is running at—something you can’t do due to its lack of traditional “1, 2, 3” button settings.
Smart Silence(TM):
So…”Smart Silence(TM)” is one of the main unique features the Wand by We-Vibe boasts. According to the We-Vibe website, “Smart Silence(TM) senses when Wand is close to your skin—turning the vibrations on when you’re ready to go and off as soon you want to stop, without you having to fumble with any buttons.”
This feature, in my opinion, was probably designed with the needs of “busy moms” and other individuals who needed a quick masturbation kill switch so as not to get caught. As someone with no children who lives only with my partner, this feature isn’t the type of thing that would benefit me. The other argument here would be that if you get easily overstimulated towards the end of a masturbation session, the Wand by We-Vibe will instantly shut off on its own.
Before this toy even arrived, I already knew that the Smart Silence (TM) feature was almost certain to send me into a rage so explosive, it would launch me into space where I would combust alongside a burning star. Still, I wanted to see just how pissed off it would make me.
Reading reviews from other bloggers, a lot of people said the Smart Silence (TM) initially threw them for a loop and made them think the toy simply wasn’t turning on. While I was coming into my experience with the bias of my existing knowledge, I wanted to try and replicate a truly new user’s experience as closely as possible. Still, I was still biased in having looked up information beforehand and knowing “oh, you have to touch the wand’s head to your skin in order for it to operate.”
My partner didn’t do the same research as me, though, and when I handed it to them to try they were a bit confused and asked “uh, is it actually on???” Yes, it was actually on. Thanks, Smart Silence(TM).
Turning off the Smart Silence (TM) was another thing many other bloggers mentioned struggling with. I, too struggled with turning it off! I pulled up the PDF manual on We-Vibe’s website, since I didn’t feel like getting up and looking at the paper manual that had been included with the wand.
I couldn’t find what I was looking for in the manual, and instead frantically typed TURN OFF WE-VIBE WAND SMART SILENCE!!! where I was linked to local superhero Betty Butch’s review of the Wand where, mercifully, instructions on how to turn it off are included (to turn it off manually, you press and hold the pattern button for several seconds).
Annoyingly, turning off Smart Silence (TM)—from my experience and understanding—has to be done EVERY TIME the vibrator is powered on. I wish that instead of having Smart Silence (TM) set as the default from the start, it was instead an optional setting that could be enabled. It would be great if there was a way to make it so that Smart Silence (TM) had its own specific on/off switch or manual button, too, instead of the confusing, mystifying controls it currently utilizes.
Returning to my original hypothesis: would Smart Silence (TM) send me blasting into an explosive rage?
It sure did! At least I know how to reliably turn it off now, but GOD it was unnecessarily frustrating!
I will say, though, that my partner had a more favorable experience with Smart Silence(TM) than I did, and actually liked the feature while they carried out their testing of the toy. They thought it was convenient and suited their personal style of masturbation, so it goes to show that your mileage with this feature will vary.
At least it can be turned off, that’s all I’m going to say.
Vibrations:
Going into testing the Wand by We-Vibe, I was nervous to say the least.
The only other wand vibrator I’ve tried is the Magic Wand Rechargeable, which I…don’t love. I felt really bad about myself initially due to my inability to be as enthusiastic as so many other people were about the iconic Magic Wand Rechargeable. The overwhelmingly powerful vibrations of the Magic Wand Rechargeable are often too buzzy for me, and while they can draw out an orgasm from me even when I’m not feeling it, they also leave me feeling tingly, numb, and sore.
Since We-Vibe is known for their deep, powerful vibrations, such as those in the Tango and Tango X, I was really hopeful that the Wand by We-Vibe would deliver a similar standard of rumbling vibrations. I was happy to have this hope confirmed as soon as I turned it on.
The Wand by We-Vibe doesn’t deliver the same power as the Magic Wand Rechargeable, but it’s definitely on par with the strong, deep vibrations of We-Vibe’s other toys. I would compare it to the strength of the Rave, but in a super ergonomic design. While it’s not as strong as the Magic Wand Rechargeable, it’s still VERY strong, and I like that its vibrations don’t have the unpleasant buzziness that accompanies the Magic Wand Rechargeable’s stronger vibrations. Sure, the Magic Wand Rechargeable is stronger—but to me, it doesn’t feel as good.
Overall, I really enjoyed the vibrations of the Wand by We-Vibe and greatly preferred them compared to the vibrations of the Magic Wand Rechargeable.
Vibration Patterns:
In addition to a standard, steady vibration, the Wand by We-Vibe offers 9 other pattern settings: low, pulse, wave, cha-cha, tease, tempo, ramp, heartbeat, and step.
While patterns aren’t something my partner and I typically enjoy or take interest in, the Wand surprised us and wound up having several patterns that appealed to us. Additionally, the ability to adjust the intensity of each pattern is also a perk. Patterns are often bad due to being too slow, too drawn out, or simply too boring. We-Vibe is really good at creating patterns that actually DON’T SUCK. Incredible!
Wand by We-Vibe Attachments:
I’ve been intrigued about the Wand by We-Vibe’s attachments ever since I first laid eyes on the toy. As I mentioned before, the teal makes them catch my attention visually, but I was also extremely curious to know what they felt like. Namely, the weird scrunchy looking one.
The Wand by We-Vibe comes with two attachments included, which is a unique perk it offers compared to other wands. The scrunchy one is named “Fluttery,” and the other is named “Stroke,” and clearly designed to be a penis stroker. We-Vibe’s product description states “there’s something here for every body,” which I imagine is a shout-out to how popular—yet unappreciated—wand style vibrators are as a penis stimulating toy. Seriously, for as popular wand vibrators are with penises, they should have been referenced in pop culture way more by now. Like, it at least should’ve come up in a Broad City episode or something.
I commend We-Vibe for specifically including a penis-oriented attachment with their Wand, as it helps bring the idea of wand vibrators as a penis toy out of the shadows and into more mainstream thought. If nothing else, it gives people the opportunity to look at it and think, ”—huh! Well, I guess I do see how that could feel nice on a penis!”
Admittedly, my partner and I were unable to find a use for the Stroke, due to neither of us possessing a penis. When I gave it a try…yeah, it didn’t do anything. It’s no big deal, though. It’s not designed for me. Not everything is for me, and that’s fine.
The Fluttery, meanwhile, immediately captivated my partner (in a non-sexual capacity) due to how stimmy it is (in the sense of being appealing to neurodivergent individuals). We named it “Brushy Simulator 6000” for its ability to replicate a soothing brushy touch, like the one featured in this video of a bat gently being groomed with a toothbrush.
During actual use, the Fluttery was…not really my thing. It concentrated the vibrations of the Wand and made them feel more…well, fluttery is the word, but kind of in an annoying mosquito way. It felt interesting, sure, but it wasn’t a feeling I wanted to experience for any extended period of time. Certainly, I also knew this feeling wouldn’t bring me to orgasm.
The attachments were a little bit of a struggle to get on, although they were easy to keep on thanks to a groove on the Wand’s head meant to interlock with a matching groove on the attachments. They click together like puzzle pieces…muah. Chef’s kiss.
If you’re a fan of using attachments, you MUST turn off Smart Silence (TM) before attempting to use them on the Wand. The design of Smart Silence (TM) means that even if you’re pressing the attachment against yourself, it’s not a guarantee that the Wand will register this correctly, meaning the toy will either not turn on or it will intermittently, randomly turn off.
The attachments ultimately weren’t my thing, but it was still a nice thought of We-Vibe to include them. And again, I like the fun teal color.
Wand by We-Vibe Performance:
When I first turned on the Wand, I could immediately tell it wasn’t as strong as the Magic Wand Rechargeable. Setting the two vibrators side by side further confirmed this fact, but…sometimes, strength isn’t everything.
The vibrations of the Wand by We-Vibe feel more restrained, with a deeper timbre than the Magic Wand Rechargeable. They’re still very strong, but they don’t have that tingly, buzzy edge that the Magic Wand Rechargeable does. I found the Wand by We-Vibe far more pleasant to use, especially since I felt I could use it multiple times without feeling like my clit had gone through a blender. I don’t like that the Magic Wand Rechargeable obliterates my clit, and I’m glad to have a wand-style vibrator that provides powerful vibration and ergonomic ease of use without knocking me out for the rest of the day.
I especially like that the head of the Wand by We-Vibe is much more rigid and less flexible compared to that of the Magic Wand Rechargeable. It also has a really great texture to its silicone head. I like to firmly push toys against me and grind on them while masturbating, and it’s been frustrating to me in the past when the Magic Wand Rechargeable bent to conform to me rather than providing resistance and pushing back against me. Additionally, I always felt worried that I was going to break off the head of the Magic Wand Rechargeable. With the Wand by We-Vibe, I don’t have that problem.
The Wand by We-Vibe is also more appealing to me because it’s completely waterproof. When I use the Magic Wand Rechargeable, I usually do it through my pants because not only is it painful to do otherwise, but it’s also stressful to wash a toy that isn’t entirely waterproof—or even splashproof. When cleaning the Magic Wand Rechargeable, I’m always afraid that I’m going to get a drop of water in the wrong place and kill the whole toy. With the Wand by We-Vibe, I can just dunk the whole thing—no worries.
Please Tell Me This Will Soothe my Back, Shoulder, and Neck Pain:
I WAS SO HAPPY THAT THIS FELT BETTER FOR FOR MY NECK THAN THE MAGIC WAND RECHARGEABLE!!! The ergonomic handle makes it so much easier to navigate as an actual back/shoulder massager—it feels both lighter and more natural to hold than the Magic Wand Rechargeable. It’s not as powerful, but for my shoulders I prefer the reduced strength, and more than anything, I appreciate the reduced buzziness.
As a confession, the first time my partner and I planned on using the Wand together, we didn’t get very far. It was meant to be my first time testing the Wand, period, but…the Wand never made it to my clit. While doing other sex stuff with my partner as a prelude to incorporating the Wand, I turned the wrong way and pulled a muscle REALLY badly. It’s an injury I’ve inflicted upon myself before, regrettably, and I knew I was going to be in for several days of pain and limited mobility as soon as I felt it happen.
The injury originated in the muscle surrounding my left shoulder, shooting into my mid back as well as extending into my upper back and neck. I was immediately cursing myself, overcome with pain and unable to turn my head to look to my left. As my partner and I dressed, sex having come to a screeching halt, I still reached for the Wand as originally planned…but put it on my aching back instead of my clit.
With my limited range of motion and my pain in an awkward spot, I was relieved by how light and easy to hold the Wand was—a contrast to the more unwieldy Magic Wand Rechargeable I would’ve turned to before. The vibrations felt really good, and while they couldn’t completely cure my pain, they definitely helped to soothe it and dissipate a little bit of the muscle tension. Simply because the Wand by We-Vibe is so much less buzzy, I found it more pleasant as a pain relief tool than the Magic Wand Rechargeable.
Final Thoughts on the Wand by We-Vibe:
The Wand by We-Vibe is definitely the new wand vibrator of choice in my house, hands down. Both my partner and I preferred it compared to the Magic Wand Rechargeable, and plan on using it a great deal in the future. The vibrations are powerful, but not buzzy, resolving my main complaint with my other wand vibrator, the Magic Wand Rechargeable. It doesn’t have the same raw power as the Magic Wand Rechargeable, but for me this was a positive rather than a negative, as the Magic Wand Rechargeable and I really didn’t get along.
I really love the texture of the Wand by We-Vibe, and I love how ergonomic and natural holding the handle feels. The silicone surrounding the head is great, and I happily reached for the Wand multiple times in a row. I loved that there were no buzzy vibrations to be found that would unpleasantly numb out my clit. The Smart Silence(TM) is really annoying, but at least once you figure out how to turn it off, it’s easy enough to take a moment before each session of use to deactivate this “feature.” Controls with both the joystick and the app are seamless and simple, and the fact that it’s totally waterproof and wireless makes using it even more convenient.
The Wand by We-Vibe is definitely expensive, clocking in at about $180, so all of its luxury features do come at quite the price. I think it’s worth it for someone who wants a solidly good wand vibrator, and is willing to pay for luxurious features such as a fully waterproof body, app compatibility, and a body that feels like the ultimate in ergonomic engineering. I love everything about how this toy feels, and if you’re in a position where you have the option to splurge, I think this toy is definitely worth splurging on.
